Afcon 2027 Predicted To Be The ‘Most Commercially Viable Event’ For Caf

Uganda is set to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) alongside Kenya and Tanzania, making it the first time in history that three countries have hosted the showpiece.

According to Rogers Byamukama, there is a minimum guarantee of nine sold-out home games. It would be unprecedented as a single host can only guarantee three home games.

The board member of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) predicts the 2027 tournament to be the most profitable one for the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Taking Advantage Of Existing Transport Links & Population

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are expected to name a joint organising committee soon. Yet a tournament spread across three nations entails unique challenges.

Last week, stakeholders from all three sides held discussions in Kenya, with infrastructure and anticipated difficulties dominating their talks.

Byamukama expects the 2027 event will put existing transport links and the collective population of the neighbouring nations – more than 162 million – to good use.

True Cost Of Afcon 2027 Beyond The Pre-Paid Guarantee Deposit

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are expected to make a cash deposit of $90 million to Caf by January 2025. The money involves logistics encompassing hotels, security and VIP protection.

The pre-paid guarantee deposit is expected to minimise the risk of a late postponement or re-allocation of hosting rights emanating from financial challenges.

While the true cost has not yet been determined beyond the deposit, Byamukama believes “there is no cause for alarm” regarding financing.

Tanzania Appears Best Prepared. What About Uganda And Kenya?

Host nations must have a minimum of six stadiums, two of which must be able to hold at least 40,000 spectators. Uganda has announced plans for renovations and new constructions.

Meanwhile, Kenya has confirmed construction of a brand new stadium. Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba promised: “We will be ready for the Afcon no matter what.”

Tanzania appears best prepared of the three neighbours, with the 60,000-seater Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam ready to host if the Nations Cup kicked off today.
