Africa’s COVID-19 caseload goes past 700,000; deaths close to 15,000

As of today, the case load on Africa has reached the 700,000 mark. Half of the cases are reported in South Africa where more than 350,000 cases have been confirmed.

As of last Friday (July 17), the WHO Africa region announced that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the region had risen by 27 per cent.

10 countries account for 88% (440,672) of all reported COVID19 cases in the African Region: South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Senegal, Ethiopia & DRC, a WHO Africa situation report noted.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to over 26 percent of the world ‘s refugees and about 19 million internally displaced people.

It is in the interests of stability, international security and prosperity that all countries and partners do more to support these vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 crisis.

The five most affected countries are as follows:

South Africa = 350,879

Egypt = 87,172

Nigeria = 36,107

Ghana = 27,060

Algeria = 22,549
