Algeria set to hold constitutional referendum on Nov. 1

Algeria will hold a referendum on a revised charter on Nov. 1, the country’s presidency introduced on Monday.    

The date coincides with the 66th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution against French colonial rule.

  A presidency announcement stated that following President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s consultations with Mohamed Chorfi, head of the Algerian elections authority, and with different relevant bodies, a date for the vote was once determined.  

Last week, Tebboune known as on applicable authorities our bodies to start preparations for the referendum as demanded by way of February 2019 protests that led to the cease of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s 20 years of rule that April.  

In January, Tebboune assigned 17 constitutional professionals in the us of a to draft a new constitution inside three months. 

The draft changes consist of growing the submit of vice president and increasing the powers of the high minister.
