Apple iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro launch: Event Timing for Africa

As well as the hardware announcements, Apple is expected to reveal the release dates for its upcoming software updates. These are iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, visionOS 2 and macOS Sequoia.

Timing and where to watch

The Apple ‘Glowtime’ special event will take place at Apple Cupertino Park in California. It is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET). Here’s the timing for various African time zones:

  • West Africa Time (WAT): 5 p.m.
  • Central Africa Time (CAT): 6 p.m.
  • East Africa Time (EAT): 7 p.m.

A global audience will be able to tune in virtually to witness the event.

According to reports, Apple boss Tim Cook is set to unveil four new iPhones at the Glowtime event on 9 September.

While Apple has kept its usual silence on the next range of iPhones, rumours and leaks have revealed almost every detail about the devices that will be launched.

How much can we expect?

Apple is expected to manufacture the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India, according to a Bloomberg report. Many observers are therefore hoping for a drop in the retail price of these devices in the country.

The local assembly of high-end iPhone models could lead to a price reduction of up to 10% for the new iPhone 16 Pro models.

Specifications expected?

  • Bigger screen: iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to feature a larger screen of 6.3 inches (up from 6.1 inches) and 6.9 inches (up from 6.7 inches) than their predecessors.
  • Slimmer edges: Apple is said to be using a new BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology for iPhone 16 Pro models, which could mean thinner edges than last year’s Pro models.
  • Processors: iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to be equipped with A18 Pro chips. The standard versions of the iPhone 16 should be equipped with the A18 chipset (lower clock speed).
  • New colour: The phones should be available in a new range of colours, including blue, green, pink, white and black. Leaks also suggest that Apple may be looking to add a new brownish hue to the iPhone 16 Pro series, which could be called Desert Titanium. Other rumours suggest that a gold colour option could be added this year.
  • Camera: iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumoured to feature an improved 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. It will likely retain the tetraprism telephoto lens from its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • Battery: The device could be powered by a 4.6-inch battery.
  • Memory: The iPhone 16 Pro Max is likely to start with a base storage of 256GB and ditch the 128GB variant similar to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
