Breaking: Oil from damaged ship cleared in Mauritius

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 02:35 pm

Almost all the gas oil from the Japanese-owned ship that prompted a huge oil spill, off the coast of Mauritius has been pumped out,

Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth says the operation had been a race in opposition to time. This came amid fears that the MV Wakashio would destroy up.

The ship, believed to have been carrying 4,000 tonnes of gasoline oil, ran aground on a coral reef on July 25.

Thousands of Mauritians have been working for days to limit the injury through making improvised booms from material and stuffed with straw and sugar cane leaves to strive to include the oil’s spread. Others have scooped up oil from the shallow waters.

Mauritius is domestic to world-renowned coral reefs, and famous with tourists. Prime minister Jugnauth described the oil spill a countrywide disaster.
