The Africa Cup of Nations 2023 is getting more exciting as we’re now at the semi-finals. DR Congo has made it there by beating Guinea 3-1. This is a big deal because DR Congo had to come from behind to win.
They were losing after Guinea’s Mohamed Bayo scored a penalty in the 20th minute. But then Chancel Mbemba from DR Congo scored a goal, making it 1-1.
In the second half, things turned around for DR Congo. They got a penalty after Julian Jeanvier from Guinea fouled Silas. Yoane Wissa, who plays for Brentford, scored from the penalty, putting DR Congo in the lead.
Guinea tried to come back, but they couldn’t. The final nail in the coffin was Arthur Masuaku’s free-kick, which surprised Guinea’s goalkeeper, Ibrahim Kone.
Before this match, DR Congo hadn’t won any games outright in Ivory Coast, where the tournament is happening. They even had to win a penalty shootout against Egypt.
Their next game is in the semi-finals, where they’ll play against either Mali or Ivory Coast. This is the first time DR Congo has reached the semi-finals since they came third in 2015.
The other team that made it to the semi-finals is Nigeria. They won against Angola 1-0. We’re now waiting to see which other teams will join Nigeria and DR Congo in the semi-finals.
