Entertainment: Bongo Riot opens up about financial difficulties amid Covid-19 outbreak

Bongo Riot, whose real title is Mphikheli Zungu, walked away with the coveted Best Reggae Album for “True Stories” at the recently-held virtual South African Music Awards.

Reflecting on his massive moment, the muso revealed: “I can’t provide an explanation for the feeling…I was once overwhelmed. It felt incredible that finally, Reggae has observed it rightful focus in the South African song industry.”

The muso, who lately took on a job as a miner, says he is honoured to have his talent and physique of work ultimately recognised.

A former Gang of Instrumental band member, he had to mute his mic over two years in the previous and get a regular job due to financial constraints.

“I took the job at the mines in order to financially compensate for my track profession and fulfil my household responsibilities,” he added.

The Kwa-Thema-born muso says, whilst track stays his first love, he will continue to work at the mines.

“I have made a decision to proceed working at the mine, taking into consideration that my musical creativity has prolonged million cases because I don’t worry anymore about how I fulfil my family responsibilities or now not having enormously paying bookings. I’m in a higher kingdom of questioning now.”
