Explained | Analyzing bilateral relations between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates

The bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sudan started growing gradually over the years. The two countries have increased cooperation in various areas. The UAE has a long history of providing aid to Sudan during tough times. The UAE also made investments in projects with Sudan. 

The UAE is set to build a new Red Sea port in Sudan in order to help the country after the 2021 October coup. The UAE and Sudan signed a $6 billion investment package in 2022, which included a free trade zone between the two countries, a large agricultural project and a $300 million deposit to Sudan’s central bank. 

In 2022, the UAE and Sudan agreed to establish strategic economic partnerships in various fields. The UAE also agreed to support the financial activities in Sudan.

Last year, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto ruler of Sudan met with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE to discuss the situation in Khartoum. Subsequently, the UAE pledged bank deposits in the Sudanese economy.

How the UAE Helps Sudan

The UAE provided urgent aid to Sudan when the flood caused havoc in Sudan in 2022. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the provision of AED 25 million of aid for Sudanese people impacted by floods. 

The UAE established camps in Sudanese villages in order to provide urgent aid to flood victims and displaced people. Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), a volunteer humanitarian organization in the UAE, operated an air bridge to Khartoum to provide relief aid to people impacted by the flood and torrential rains. 

The UAE aid planes carried shelter materials, tents, food and medical aid parcels to Khartoum. The UAE’s aid helped more than 140,000 flood victims in Sudan. The UAE’s aid included 10,000 tents, 28,000 food and medical aid supplies, and 120 tonnes of shelter materials.

In 2020, the UAE sent medical supplies to Sudan that included vaccines, test kits, masks and sanitiser. The aid helped medical professionals fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
