Ghana coach resigns after FIFA World Cup exit

Otto Addo, the coach of Ghana, has left his position in light of the team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup elimination. After losing to Portugal and Uruguay, Ghana placed last in Group H and was eliminated from the competition.

After being eliminated, Addo announced that he would step down as the head coach of Ghana’s national team.

As I already stated, it was obvious that I would stop after the World Cup. I like my job at Dortmund, and my family and I currently envisage our future in Germany, said Addo.

The talent manager for Borussia Dortmund further claimed that even if Ghana had won the world championship, he would have left his position there. Addo continued, “I stated I would step down following the World Cup even if we were world winners.

After his team was eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Addo announced his resignation, making him the fourth coach to end his career with a national team. He joins other coaches who quit their jobs right away after their team was eliminated from the World Cup, including Roberto Martinez (Belgium), Carlos Queiroz (Iran), and Gerardo Martino (Mexico).

The choice of the 47-year-old, a former Ghanaian international who was born in Germany and participated for the Black Stars in their maiden World Cup finals participation in 2006, had come as a surprise. Between Ghana’s elimination from the January Africa Cup of Nations finals and their March World Cup qualifying playoff match against Nigeria, he took up the position.

The youth teams of Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund were the only teams he had previously coached. Chris Hughton, a former manager of Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, served as his advisor as Ghana defeated Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

Before they begin their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in March, Ghana must act quickly to appoint a new coach.
