Following a recent coup in Guinea, the West African bloc ECOWAS has decided to suspend the country, according to Burkinabe Foreign Minister Alpha Barry. Barry told reporters in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will send a mediation mission to Guinea on Thursday.

Guinean special forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya seized power and arrested President Alpha Conde on Sunday, prompting international condemnation. Conde had been chastised for his alleged authoritarianism. In 2010, the 83-year-old was elected as the country’s first democratically elected president, and he was re-elected in
2015.

However, he was successful in getting a new constitution passed last year, allowing him to run for a third term in October 2020. The move sparked widespread protests, with dozens of protesters killed. Conde was elected, but the political opposition claimed the election was rigged. On Wednesday, the ECOWAS regional bloc held an extraordinary
virtual summit to discuss the turmoil in Guinea.

Following that, Burkinabe Foreign Minister Alpha Barry stated that ECOWAS would ask the African Union and the United Nations to support the suspension of Guinea. The coup has sparked fears of a democratic backslide in the region, where military strongmen are becoming more common. Colonel Assimi Goita, a strongman in Guinea’s neighbor Mali, has launched two coups since August.
