Heavy rains in Uganda cause landslides that result in 15 deaths

According to reports from the Red Cross, a landslide that was caused by intense rainfall claimed the lives of at least 15 people in western Uganda. The disaster occurred when the heavy rains buried the residents’ homes. According to a statement released on Monday by a spokeswoman for the Uganda Red Cross named Irene Nakasiita, the majority of people who died were females and children.

During the time that the remark was being made, rescue teams were actively searching for anyone who had survived the disaster by digging into the mud. Nakasiita said that at least six people had been found and taken to a hospital in the area. She showed pictures of rescue workers digging for more victims.

Because it is located in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, which straddle the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Kasese district, which is where the accident took place, is prone to landslides, particularly during the rainy season.

Since the end of July, strong rains have been falling in most of Uganda. This has ended a long drought, but it has also caused deaths, floods, and damage to crops, homes, and other infrastructure.

In eastern Uganda’s Mbale region in the month of July, flooding brought on by heavy rains was responsible for the deaths of at least 24 people. At least 41 people died in October 2018 when a landslide happened on the slopes of Mount Elgon and went through the village of Nanyinza in the same area.

The country’s weather agency had warned that the season, which runs from August to December, would be hit by unusually heavy and damaging rains. It told people who live in hilly areas to be careful or move to safer areas.
