‘High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan’ Held by UAE, Ethiopia, AU and IGAD

A major humanitarian conference held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on February 14th 2025 bringing together key regional and international leaders to address the worsening crisis in Sudan. The conference was held by the UAE, Ethiopia, the African Union and IGAD.

The ultimate objective was straightforward, which is to mobilize urgent support for millions of Sudanese affected by conflict and displacement while asking for a humanitarian ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan. 

Some of the eminent participants of the conference included Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The UAE promised an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid bringing the total amount of its support for Sudan to over $600 million. Various other commitments were also made by different organizations and countries to hasten the relief effort. 

Focus on Humanitarian Aid, Civilian Protection and Peace Efforts:

The conference was open to the middle community on the emergency humanitarian aid delivery that would ensure the protection of civilians, peace and stability in Sudan. Union leaders strongly noted that the unrestricted access by humanitarian staffers must be guaranteed with urgency as a measure to stop any additional suffering or displacements. They further urged prompt action by the international community to avert additional displacements or suffering arising in parts of Sudan.

Civilians protection was at the top of the Union’s agenda with an appeal for immediate cessation of attacks to tackle the hostilities. AU and IGAD leaders referred to mediation efforts for peace urging inclusive dialogue to end hostility and stabilize Sudan.
