The Nigerian military claims that approximately 6,000 Boko Haram members have surrendered to authorities in the previous several weeks, including commanders, fighters, and their families.

Hundreds of Boko Haram members have reportedly surrendered in Cameroon. According to the army, terrorists in Nigeria have surrendered in large numbers as a result of a fierce military onslaught in the country’s north-east. Another factor could be Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau’s death in May.

Many of his supporters have either surrendered to authorities or shifted allegiance to the breakaway Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap). Those who have surrendered are now being profiled for possible deradicalization and rehabilitation, according to Nigerian authorities.

Some Nigerians, however, are wary of reintegrating former fighters into society, citing possible hazards. Boko Haram‘s insurgency, which began in 2009, has killed over 300,000 people and caused millions more to flee Nigeria and other countries in the Lake Chad region, according to the United Nations.
