Professional golfer Joaquin Niemann has won his first title at the 2024 LIV Golf League in Mayakoba, Mexico. He won after a challenging four-hole playoff against Sergio Garcia, another skilled golfer.
This victory is significant for Niemann because he joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in 2022 and this is his first big win there.
Niemann, who is 25 years old, has been playing exceptionally well lately. He had top finishes in other tournaments, including a fifth place in the Australian PGA. His win at the Australian Open also qualified him for the 2024 Open Championship.
However, he faces challenges in participating in some major tournaments like the Masters and the U.S. Open. This is mainly because the LIV Golf League does not get world-ranking points, which are important for qualifying in these majors.
Despite these challenges, Niemann remains hopeful and motivated. He believes his recent performances and victories demonstrate his ability and right to compete in major tournaments.
He expressed this sentiment after his win at Mayakoba, where he also impressively scored a 59 in the first round.
The 2024 LIV Golf League at Mayakoba had some changes this year. They added a new team and changed the scoring system. Despite these changes, the tournament saw intense competition, especially in the final rounds.
Niemann and Garcia both finished with a score of 12-under-par. Other notable players like Jon Rahm and Dean Burmester tied for third place, while Dustin Johnson, Charles Howell III, and Brooks Koepka tied for fifth.
Joaquin Niemann won the 2024 LIV Golf League in Mayakoba, earning $4 million. He beat Sergio Garcia, who took home $2.25 million. Jon Rahm and Dean Burmester tied for third, each winning $1.25 million.
Dustin Johnson, Charles Howell III, and Brooks Koepka, all tied for fifth, earned $700,000 each. The total prize money was $20 million.
In the team category, Rahm’s Legion XIII team won $3 million. The Crushers came second, winning $1.5 million, and Niemann’s team, Torque, finished third, earning $500,000. This event showed the high stakes and rewards of professional golf.
