Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich has broken the world record half marathon

Ruth Chepngetich ran from Yalemzerf Yehualaw of Ethiopia in the final round to win the Half Marathon in Istanbul and set a new world record; The 26-year-old beat the previous record, set 14 months ago by Ababel Yeshaneh, 29 seconds

The 26-year-old, who won in 2017 and 2019, ran Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in the final stages of the race to win in 38 seconds and beat Ababel Yeshaneh’s previous record set by Ras Al Khaimah in February last year.

Kenya’s two-time 5,000m world champion Hellen Obiri finished third with a time of 1:04:51 – the first-smallest marathon in history – to mark the first time. three women finish in 65 minutes part of the marathon. Chepngetich, 26, was followed by Turkey’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw (1hr 4:40) along with two-time 5000m World Cup winner Hellen Obiri who finished third in 1hr. 4:51.

This was the first time three women had finished in 65 minutes in a half marathon. Chepngetich has left Yehualaw in the final stages to secure its place in the record books and win the tournament for the third time, after 2017 and 2019.A powerful early run was set by Brigid Kosgei, Kenya’s marathon record holder, who eventually finished fifth, almost two minutes ago.

Chepngetich covered the first 10km at 30:21, maintaining the rhythm of the line despite the wet conditions
