Doumbouya promised to keep the country’s international commitments while transitioning to civilian rule when he was sworn in as interim president earlier this month. He led the overthrow of President Alpha Conde on September 5. On October 1, Supreme Court President Mamadou Sylla swore in Doumbouya for an indefinite transition period.

The new interim president has promised that neither he nor any other junta member will run in any future elections that the military has promised to hold after the transition period is completed. He stated that his administration’s purpose was to “refound the state” by creating a new constitution, eliminating corruption, modernizing the electoral system, and holding “free, credible, and transparent” elections. He promised to appoint a prime minister, then a government, and other “transitional entities” in a public statement after being sworn in.
