Mohamed Beavogui, a development expert, has been named Prime Minister by the Guinean junta.

Guinea – Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who took power in Guinea after a military coup on September 5, named development veteran Mohamed Beavogui as prime minister in a proclamation read on national television on Wednesday. Beavogui, 68, has a distinguished career with international organizations such as the United Nations, but no experience in the national government, potentially putting him at odds with Guinea’s current political infighting.

The son of a diplomat and an engineering graduate, he specializes in agricultural development funding and risk management. Doumbouya promised to keep the country’s international commitments while transitioning to civilian rule when he was sworn in as interim president earlier this month. He led the overthrow of President Alpha Conde on September 5. On October 1, Supreme Court President Mamadou Sylla swore in Doumbouya for an indefinite transition period.

The new interim president has promised that neither he nor any other junta member will run in any future elections that the military has promised to hold after the transition period is completed. He stated that his administration’s purpose was to “refound the state” by creating a new constitution, eliminating corruption, modernizing the electoral system, and holding “free, credible, and transparent” elections. He promised to appoint a prime minister, then a government, and other “transitional entities” in a public statement after being sworn in.

He also announced the formation of an anti-corruption body.On September 5, President Condé, 83, was impeached, marking the latest episode of unrest in one of Africa’s most unstable countries. The deposed president is being held in an undisclosed location. The putschists grabbed control in a matter of hours, with the media stating that 12 to 20 individuals were killed.Last year, Putin passed a controversial new constitution that allows him to run for reelection in October 2020.
