At a Pharaonic necropolis just outside Cairo on Saturday, Egypt showcased a collection of newly unearthed, exquisitely decorated ancient tombs. This month, archeologists found five graves. They date back to the Old Kingdom, which lasted from 1570 B.C. to 1069, as well as the First Intermediate Period, which lasted for more than a century after the old kingdom fell.
Egyptian archaeologists began excavation on the site in September, according to Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. He said that the tombs were used by people who were important in ancient Egypt, like regional rulers and palace managers.
All five graves are beautifully painted and ornamented. The excavations continued unabated. We intend to carry on with our excavations. We assume there are additional graves to be found in this location, “he told the media about it. The tombs were found in the Saqqara necropolis, which is about 24 kilometers southwest of Cairo. They were found near the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
Burial holes leading to the graves were shown in footage uploaded on the ministry’s social media platforms. Ancient Egyptians utilized hieroglyphic writings, representations of sacred animals, and after-life goods to decorate their walls. The famous Giza pyramids, as well as smaller pyramids at Abu Sir, Dahshur, and Abu Ruwaysh, are all part of a large necropolis in Egypt’s ancient city of Memphis. In the 1970s, the ruins of Memphis were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of how important they are to history.
