NEWS: ECOWAS gives Mali’s military junta until Sept. 15 deadline to hand over power

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 08:25 am

The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has asked the military junta in Mali to appoint a civilian transition head by using 15 September, a little over one week from today, the AFP reports.

The development comes following the 57th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held on Monday in Niamey, Niger.

Mali’s army ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar on 18 August following weeks of protests in the country.

The 75-year-old and his Prime Minister Boubou Cisse have been arrested alongside other authorities officers after the cross through the military.

Keita was held in detention for 10 days, with the army justifying the go saying it used to be crucial for his own security. He was once flown overseas for medical cure upon his release.

ECOWAS late remaining month requested the military to appoint a civilian head to lead the transitional government, however did now not announce any closing date for doing so.

Monday’s announcement now leaves the navy junta with only eight days to transfer electricity to a civilian, who ECOWAS said would no longer participate in the country’s subsequent presidential election.
