NEWS: Former President of Tanzania Mkapa is dead

Tanzania’s former President Benjamin William Mkapa, 81, is dead, President John Magufuli has announced.

Mkapa died on Friday at a Tanzanian hospital.

In a statement, Magufuli advised Tanzanians to stay calm. “It is with a heavy heart that we have obtained the information of Mkapa’s passing,” he said.

Mkapa led Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 earlier than handing over to Jakaya Kikwete.

He was once born on November 12, 1938.
