Nigeria: Elected politicians and judges set to get 114% salary raise

Muhammad Shehu, the chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), an agency of Nigeria, has said that the salaries of elected Nigerian politicians, judges, and public office holders will be increased by 114 per cent.

Muhammad Shehu presented the reports of the reviewed salaries package to Nasir Idris, governor of Kebbi, a state in northwestern Nigeria. Muhammadu Shehu, represented by the Federal Commissioner, Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, presented the remuneration report to Nasir Idris during a visit at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria will allow the implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages for political, public, and judicial officers in the country.

The RMAFC chairman asked the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to amend relevant laws to pave the way for a 114 per cent salary rise for elected politicians and judges in Nigeria.

Muhammadu Shehu reportedly said, “It empowers the RMAFC to determine the remuneration appropriate for political office holders, including the President, Vice President, Governors, Deputy Governors, Ministers, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Legislators, and the holders of the offices mentioned in Sections 84 and 124 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He mentioned that the last time the remuneration was reviewed was in 2007. He highlighted the importance of reviewing salaries after 16 years. Muhammadu Shehu further said, “16 years after the last review, it is imperative that the Remuneration Packages for the categories of office holders mentioned in relevant Sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) should be reviewed.”

Shehu said that the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) recommended January 1, 2023, as the effective date for the commencement of the new salary packages. 

Abubakar Tafida; Speaker Kebbi State House of Assembly and Muhammadu Ankwai; Acting Chief Judge of the State, were also present at the meeting.
