ACTRESS Nombulelo Mhlongo is back on the small screens.
This return comes after a break of almost two years, during which she spread her wings with music. The 31-year-old actress and musician from Pongola, KZN, who made her name in Uzalo and Durban Gen, has joined the e.tv series Scandal! and plays the role of MaDlomo.
Previously she was popular in Durban Gen, where she played nurse Sne Mtshali, before the series was discontinued by eTV in January 2023.
Speaking to the Daily Sun, Nombulelo said that in Scandal! she is playing a different character, that of a decent wife, similar to the one she played in Uzalo as Nomcebo.
I moved from Durban to Joburg to concentrate on my character in Scandal! and I hope people will continue to love me.
‘I hope people will continue to love me. There’s also something coming up on Netflix where I’ll be playing something different. I ask my fans to stay tuned and not disown me when they see this character that I will only be playing,’ she said.
Meanwhile, Nombulelo is featured on DJ Exclusive Drum’s song Sixakekile, where she sings alongside Somandla’s Mpumi Mzobe.
Having studied music at the Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in KwaMashu, she went on to study music in the United States a few years ago.
‘I started at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in Los Angeles, where I studied performance art, and then moved on to the Workshop Theatre in New York.
‘Although I specialise in classical music and opera, I’m a versatile artist. I’m going to make that dance music that is loved here in Mzansi,’ she said.
She went on to say that in the near future she might release her own music.
Many awards have been won by Nombulelo, including Best Actress in the South, East Africa and Best Actress in Africa at the Zikomo Africa Awards, held in Lusaka, Zambia, in 2023.
