Otto Addo says new Black Stars will stay after World Cup

Otto Addo, the head coach of the Black Stars, has shot down the assumption that the new players who have announced they are ready to play for the national team are doing so because of the incoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced six new players at the beginning of this month. Their names are Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, Tariq Lamptey, Patrick Pfeiffer, and Ransford Yeboah. Stephan Ambrosius and Patrick Pfeiffer are also on the roster.

As a result of the announcement made by the Ghana Football Association (Ghana FA), Ghanaians’ reactions have been diverse. Some Ghanaians have asserted that the primary motivation for their decision to play for the Black Stars is the team’s qualifying to compete in the World Cup.

On the other hand, Addo has downplayed such assertions and added that their decision extends beyond the global extravaganza.

“It’s a tough decision, and they know what they are getting into. Surely it’s not just about this World Cup. It’s about more World Cups to come, AFCONs, winning and being successful, so it’s not just about this one World Cup,” the head coach of Borussia Dortmund revealed to BBC.

Despite the fact that it was a difficult decision for each of the six new players to make themselves available for the national team, Addo is confident that they will all contribute significantly to the Black Stars’ success in the next matches.

“Since March, we’ve been talking to a lot of players who we think can have an impact on the team. I can understand it can be a difficult decision, especially if you were born in another country and you’re young. It’s a lifetime decision, unlike at the club level where you can play for several teams, so it’s complicated, and I understand them better, having been born in Germany,” he added.

He added to his statement that “We want those who have decided to get familiar with the team and the staff as soon as possible. So everybody who wants to join has to join now, so they know exactly what they’re going to do.”
