Pope names first African-American cardinal

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 08:13 am

The bishop of Rome and the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has named an African-American cardinal, who is going to be the first African-American amongst the 13 newly appointed cardinal. This is good for Africa and Catholic churches in the continent.

The new cardinals are a different gathering, with individuals hailing from Italy, Malta, the Philippines, Chile, Brunei, Mexico and the United States. What’s more, unexpectedly, the cardinals incorporated an African-American.

The 72-year-old Archbishop of Washington, Wilton Gregory, said he was a “representative individual” for being made the main African-American cardinal.
