In the picture, Princess Charlotte is wearing a blue shirt, red cardigan and leaning against a chainlink fence adorned with flowers. Eagle-eyed royal enthusiasts were quick to point out the subtle tribute to Queen Elizabeth in the photo, the flowers featured in the photograph are Clematis Elizabeth, one of the first florets named after the late Queen, according to Gardens Illustrated.
The birthday girl grinned at the camera while leaning on a bush. She paired a navy sweater and a maroon cardigan with a denim skirt and tights.
In the photo, taken in recent days by her mother Kate, Charlotte, the couple’s second child, appears all smiles in the garden of their Windsor home.
“Happy 9th birthday, Princess Charlotte!” reads the message accompanying the photo on the royal couple’s official Instagram account. “Thank you for all the kind messages today”.
As the second born to the Prince and Princess of Wales, the princess is third in line to the throne. Charlotte owes her middle names, Elizabeth and Diana, to the late Queen and Charlotte’s grandmother, Princess Diana.
Kensington Palace, the official residence of William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, regularly publishes photos to mark the children’s birthdays. Most recently, a new photo of Prince Louis was published to mark his sixth birthday. It shows the happy child flashing a smile with what appears to be a recently missing tooth.
The family have kept out of the spotlight of late after Kate revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. Prince William took a break to support the family, but returned to work last month.
