Winnie Khumalo, a singer and actress from South Africa passed away at the age of 51 following an unexpected illness as per her family. In addition to her lengthy musical career which started in the 1980s, the Afropop singer was well known for her roles in well liked South African television shows.
She has worked with well known South African musicians such as the late Brenda Fassie and is most renowned for her popular song Live My Life
According to her sister Tshepi Akeepile, the singer passed away on Tuesday on the way to the hospital. “My sister was sick. She did have a short illness and we really thought she was recovering. But this morning it turned out she hadn’t fully recovered from her illness. She was quickly rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead,” she told SABC TV.
The nature of her sickness is unclear. She will be remembered by her son, Thabo Khumalo, and daughter, Rethabile Khumalo who is also a singer.
Khumalo was well known for her strong voice and adaptable performances and she leaves a rich legacy in both music and television. In addition to being Brenda Fassie’s backup vocalist, she put out a number of solo recordings.
Social media has seen condolences from fans and other celebrities who have expressed shock and sadness.
