quebec short film invincible nominated for oscar in best short film category
The short film “Invincible” from Quebec, directed by Vincent Rene-Lortie, is in the running for an Oscar. This announcement was made by the Oscars organization, which is behind the big awards event happening in March.
“Invincible” is a powerful 30-minute movie based on a true story. It shows us the last two days of a 14-year-old boy named Marc-Antoine Bernier, played by actor Léokim Beaumier-Lépine.
This boy’s life takes a turn when he ends up in a youth centre. The story is close to the director’s heart as it’s inspired by his own childhood friend’s life.
This film has already received some big awards. It won the Iris Award for being the best short fiction film in Quebec and got a special prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival. Its ticket to the Oscars was punched when it grabbed the top prize for a fiction short film at the Chicago Youth Film Festival.
When the Oscar nominations were announced, director Vincent René-Lortie said it was like a dream coming true for him. He was thrilled to be selected among so many great films.
The Montreal-based company h264, which is distributing “Invincible,” has had experience with the Oscars before. They were there in 2019 for two other short films, “Fauve” by Jeremy Comte and “Marguerite” by Marianne Farley.
Also, Philippe Falardeau, a director who was in the Oscar race before for “Monsieur Lazhar” in 2011, supported René-Lortie’s movie.
Two other Quebec short films, “Oasis” and “Chat mort,” were in the initial Oscar talks but didn’t make the final cut.
“Invincible” is a film that dives deep into teenage mental health issues. It’s based on the sad true story of René-Lortie’s friend Marc-Antoine who tragically died at 14. The film explores his mental health and the challenges faced by many teens.
The Oscar nomination for “Invincible” is a big deal, not just for the film’s team but also for Quebec. This is the fourth time in six years a Quebec short film has been nominated in this category. The 96th Academy Awards, where we’ll find out if “Invincible” wins, is set for March 10 in Los Angeles.
