Residents in Dakar have high hopes for Sunday’s election

Local elections are taking place in Senegal on Sunday, which many consider a litmus test for both President Macky Sall and the opposition. In Senegal’s more than 500 municipalities and 46 divisions, several government ministers are running for mayor. Residents of Dakar discuss their aspirations ahead of the election.

For some, Dakar is well kept since there are green areas and security as in the city, but in the suburbs, you don’t find all of that. Vagrancy, banditry, aggression, insecurity, and pollution are all present. We anticipate that the newly elected mayors will address all of these issues,” N’Deye Kadi Fall remarked. Pape Cisse, another local, wants politics out of civic government.

“If we have a mayor in Dakar tomorrow who is an opponent of the state, the state should allow this mayor to function because mayors, regardless of their political views, should administer cities.” “The earlier mandates were ineffective. Because it’s a bluff to me, they don’t bring anything. And, for the most part, you must work for the government. When you’re not working for the government, your projects are frequently stalled, “Waly Diabira, another Dakar resident, claims.

Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, the president’s health minister, is running for mayor of Dakar. He is up against five opponents, including outspoken Sall critic Barthelemy Dias, who is mired in a legal battle over his suspected involvement in a 2011 shooting.
