South Africa: Protest as report reveals COVID-relief fund misuse

Health workers in South Africa protested on Wednesday in opposition to lacking protecting tools and low salaries as a scathing document printed the country’s COVID-19 comfort fund was misused.

Kimi Makwetu, the auditor general, stated there was once overpricing and possible fraud. In some cases, protective gear, or PPE, was sold for 5 instances more than the fee cautioned through the country wide treasury.

“There are fewer people who are capable to monitor and supervise transactions, others who be aware of best take the opportunity,” said Makwetu.

The dollars had been supposed to procure PPE, assist susceptible households with meals parcels, unemployment offers and aid small organizations and farmers.

It comes as a blow to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who vowed to tackle graft left over via his predecessor Jacob Zuma.

South Africa has the most coronavirus cases in Africa and is the sixth-worst hit Coronavirus in the world.

As of September 2, South Africa has 628 259 established instances of COVID-19 with 14 263 deaths, in accordance to the trendy statistics from the World Health Organization.
