South Africa’s Emotional Victory: A Historic Win Over Australia Secures Women’s T20 World Cup Final Spot

After defeating six-time champion Australia with a sensational 8 wickets win, in Thursday’s first semifinal match of the ongoing Women T20 World Cup, the South African women’s cricket team broke down to tears in happiness. 

Australia completed a second hattrick of titles and won their sixth when the two sides met off in the event final in 2023. Australia won by 19 runs. However the Thursday match was unusual and an unexpected day. Australia was put to bat first and South Africa knocked them to 134/5 and special thanks to two wickets taken by Ayabonga Khaka.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) shared a video of the South African players breaking down in tears on their haunches as they got closer to winning the finals of Women’s T20 World Cup.

Australia vs South Africa History

By knocking down the six-time champion Australia from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa pulled out a remarkable game. In the 2023 Newlands Cup final in Cape Town, Zimbabwe, South Africa lost against the Australia team with just 19 runs.

In addition to that, the South Africa team defeated Australia for the first time in the Women’s T20 World Cup in comparison to their previous eight matches. Not only that but they also broke the record of Australia’s 15-game winning streak in the competition.

Australia first scored 134/5 in 20 overs. With a target of 135 runs, South Africa team easily reached 135/2 in 17.2 overs thanks to this undefeated innings of 74 runs off 48 balls, which included eight fours and a six from Anneke Bosch. For Annabel Sutherland of Australia she scored two boundaries. With a goal of 135 runs, Australia was set by Beth Mooney’s 44. Ellyse Perry (31), Phoebe Litchfield (16*) and Tahlia McGrath (27) also played important knocks. Ayabonga Khaka took two wickets for South Africa’s bowling unit.

With this emotional victory now South Africa looks forward to playing against the winner of the other semi-final between the West Indies and New Zealand in the grand finale of Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
