Sudan’s Bashir requests prison transfer after aide tests positive for Coronavirus

Last updated on September 11th, 2021 at 02:51 pm

Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir requested to be transferred from prison following the news that one of his former aides had contracted the deadly coronavirus, according to his lawyer.

Bashir is currently detained in Kober Prison in the capital along with Ahmed Haroun, a former Ministry of Interior official, who was moved to the prison’s hospital wing after testing positive for the virus.

The head of Bashir’s defense team Mohamed al-Hassan al-Amin said that Haroun’s condition was not currently critical. According to al-Amin, Bashir’s legal team wants him placed under some form of house arrest rather than being detained in prison.

Haroun was reportedly sharing a prison cell with other former officials from Bashir’s administration. Haroun, like Bashir, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on Darfur war crimes charges.

Sudan’s Minister of Health Akram Ali Altoum declined to comment on al-Amin’s claims, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Omar al-Bashir was ousted from power in April 2019 by the military following months of civilian protests against his 30-year rule.

Sudan has so far reported 375 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 28 fatalities, according to the Ministry of Health.
