sudans ongoing crisis un official warns of escalating violence and atrocities
In the midst of a relentless seven-month conflict between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a senior UN official issued a dire warning. Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, grimly describes the situation as “verging on pure evil,” with reports of sexual violence, forced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and violations of human and children’s rights causing escalating concern.
Since April, approximately six million people have been displaced, and 25 million urgently require humanitarian assistance. Over 70 percent of health institutions in conflict zones are non-operational, contributing to alarming outbreaks of cholera, dengue fever, malaria, measles, and severe malnutrition among children.
In response to the escalating crisis, the UN urgently requests $2.6 billion to provide assistance to 12 million affected individuals. Amidst disturbing reports of killings, rapes, and widespread village devastation, concerns are rising that Darfur may face atrocities reminiscent of the region’s tragic history 20 years ago.
Recent reports from Chad reveal ethnically motivated killings in West Darfur, coinciding with RSF control of the main army camp in el-Geneina. Human Rights Watch expresses deep concern about the potential complete takeover of Darfur by RSF, calling for UN Security Council intervention to ensure civilian security and effectively monitor abuses.
Highlighting egregious violations against the Masalit ethnic community in Darfur, Nkweta-Salami stresses the immediate need to halt these crimes. The UN demands international intervention to address Sudan’s escalating crisis, emphasizing the urgency of preventing further atrocities.
