The 10th summit of the OACPS was held in Angola

Luanda, the capital of Angola, played host on Friday to the second-to-last summit of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OAP), which brings together representatives from 79 different nations. The OACPS is holding its tenth heads of state summit, which is also the first of three summits that Angola will host as the rotating presidency.

The topic for this year’s gathering is “Three Continents, Three Oceans, a Common Destiny: Building a Resilient and Sustainable OACPS,” while the title of the theme is “Building a Resilient and Sustainable OACPS.” Angola came to the conclusion that it needed to give priority to the urgent problems of climate change and good governance, which included the fight against corruption. The Maldives are facing an existential crisis due to the effects of climate change.

“With future sea levels expected to grow in the range of 10 to 100 centimeters by the year 2100, it is possible that the entire country would be flooded,” stated the World Bank. The island nation only joined the OACPS this year, but it is doing everything it can to get support from the world community in its fight against the menace. It was anticipated that both the President of the European Union, Charles Michel, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, would be present at the meeting. On Saturday, when it is scheduled to come to a close, all of the heads of state are expected to sign a summit declaration.

The Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States met on Saturday to examine ways in which it may enhance the human rights records of its 79 member states. Saturday was International Human Rights Day. For instance, Human Rights Watch stated in its report for the year 2022 that the armed forces of the host nation, Angola, continued to be complicit in “severe human rights abuses, including summary executions.”

The report continued, saying, “On January 30, police killed at least ten protesters when they fired without discrimination at people who had peacefully gathered to demand better public services, such as water and electricity supply, in the diamond-rich town of Cafunfu, which is located in the province of Lunda Norte.”

The Organization of African Cooperation and Development (OACP) has previously stated that by the year 2030, it anticipates that many rights issues, and even poverty itself, will have been properly addressed. This is despite the fact that many of its members have major human rights deficiencies.
