In a video supplied to an AFP correspondent on Sunday, Guinea‘s special forces claimed to have arrested President Alpha Conde and “dissolved” the country’s institutions, while the defense ministry stated it had repelled their attack on the presidency.
“After taking the president, who is currently with us, we have decided to dissolve the current constitution, to dissolve the institutions, and we have also decided to dissolve the government and close the land and air borders,” said one of the uniformed and armed coup plotters in the statement, which was widely circulated on social media but not broadcast on national television.
The coup plotters, who confirmed the source of these photographs with AFP’s correspondent, released a video of President Conde in their hands. They inquire if he has been mistreated, and Alpha Conde, who is sitting on a sofa in pants and a shirt, refuses to answer.
According to the Ministry of Defense, “the insurgents (had) generated panic” around Conakry before attacking the presidential palace, but “the presidential guard, assisted by the defense and security forces, loyalists and republicans, controlled the threat and forced back the group of assailants.”
