On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly convened a memorial session for Haitian President Jovenel Mose, who was slain in his house last week by gunmen. Vice President Keisha McGuire, speaking on behalf of General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir, condemned the death, saying the world body “cannot allow this tragedy to erase gains made or derail the future of Haiti.”

Following a minute of silence in Moise’s honor, Amina Mohammed, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, highlighted some of Moise’s achievements, including the island nation’s near-eradication of cholera.

“We join the government and the people of Haiti and mourning his excellency, President Jovenel Moïse. Today, we say goodbye not only to a head of state but to a friend, a father, a husband,” Mohammed stated his opinion.

A former Haitian senator, a sacked government employee, and a US government informant are the latest suspects in a wide-ranging probe into Mose’s assassination.

The men are among five armed and dangerous fugitives sought by police as they continued their search for individuals involved in the July 7 pre-dawn attack at Mose’s private house, in which the president was killed and his wife, Martine, was wounded.
