The World: EU urges end to Azerbaijan-Armenia clashes

The EU on Sunday referred to as for an immediate halt to border clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“The European Union calls for an instant cessation of hostilities, de-escalation and for strict observance of the cease-fire,” EU foreign coverage chief Josep Borrell stated in a statement.

“The return to negotiations of the Nagorno-Karabakh warfare contract under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, without preconditions, is wanted urgently,” he added, referring to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Borrell additionally said on Twitter that the stressful escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh undermines regional stability.

Separately, European Council President Charles Michel stated an on the spot return to negotiations, barring preconditions, is the only way forward. “Reports of fighting from the Nagorno-Karabakh fighting area are of most serious concern.

Military action need to stop, as a matter of urgency, to prevent a further escalation,” Michel stated on Twitter. Border clashes broke out on Sunday after Armenian forces targeted Azerbaijani civilian settlements and navy positions.

The variety of casualties is no longer yet known. This July, Armenian cease-fire violations martyred 12 Azerbaijani troops and wounded four others.

Relations between the two former Soviet countries have been annoying given that 1991, when Armenian army illegally occupied Upper Karabakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally identified territory of Azerbaijan.
