The World: France set to boost military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean

France stated Wednesday that it will temporarily increase its army presence in the Eastern Mediterranean in the coming days. 

President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis mentioned the latest state of affairs in the region, Macron’s workplace said in a statement. 

Underlining the significance of settling disputes via dialogue, Macron drew attention to the need for “greater consultation” between Greece and Turkey and welcomed a mediation initiative by using Germany. 

He has also determined “to quickly enhance the French army presence in the eastern Mediterranean in the coming days,” in cooperation with France’s European Union partners, said the statement. 

As part of the country’s hydrocarbon surveying activities, Turkey issued a NAVTEX (navigational telex) on Aug. 10, 2020, announcing that the Oruc Reis would commence conducting sparkling seismic lookup in the Eastern Mediterranean. 

Turkey’s choice came following a controversial delimitation deal signed between Greece and Egypt, only a day after Turkey said it would put off its activities in the vicinity as a sign of goodwill after communicate efforts from Germany. 

But after declaring the deal “null and void,” Turkey licensed the Oruc Reis to proceed its activities in an area that is inside Turkey’s continental shelf. 

The ship will continue seismic things to do in the Eastern Mediterranean alongside with the Cengiz Han and Ataman till Aug. 23.
