Thousands rally in Sudan against the military coup

Sudan – Thousands of Sudanese demonstrators once again took to the streets around Sudan on Monday to protest against the October military coup and the arrest of scores of pro-democracy activists. They rallied in Khartoum, carrying Sudanese flags and posters of others killed during protests in recent months.

At least 82 people have been killed in the protest. Reportedly, many of them were shot dead and hundreds wounded by security forces. According to medics, a 51-year-old man was hit with a bullet to the chest. Security forces fired tear gas and wounded several protesters.

According to a statement by a group of anti-coup lawyers, “The number of people detained has exceeded 200.” Reportedly, political figures and pro-democracy activists are among those who have been detained by the authorities.

The authorities have reportedly ordered that more than 40 people arrested in the crackdown on anti-coup protests be freed. The witnesses and lawyers confirmed this news. According to witnesses, on Monday, demonstrators called on the military “to go back to the barracks” in the city of Wad Madani, the capital of the Al Jazirah state in east-central Sudan.

Protesters also rallied outside a government building in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan but security forces blocked their route by firing tear gas. The latest protest took place a day after United Nations human rights expert Adama Dieng arrived on his first official visit to Sudan.

Regular protests took place in the country since an Islamist-backed military coup led by army chief Abdel Fattah al Burhan led a military takeover in October. Last week, at least two demonstrators were killed by the security forces during the protest. The Unionist Alliance party said Mohammed Al-Faki Suliman, a former member of the ruling Sovereign Council, was detained in Khartoum by the officials.
