Facebook is the most used platform in Africa

Facebook has 170 million registered social media users across the African continent. Out of 4,170 participants, 82% of the survey participants actively use Facebook in Africa. Around 68% of users use Facebook for news. Most people use Facebook to make new friends.

TikTok’s popularity is rising in Africa

TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, is also gaining momentum in Africa. TikTok’s popularity has risen in the African continent. Around 60% of users use TikTok regularly. Most people use the platform to watch short-term videos. Around 62% of the survey participants use TikTok to discover life hacks.

News consumption from X’s (Twitter)

Social media platform X, previously called Twitter, is famous among Africans for news consumption. Around 49% of the survey participants actively use X to get real-time news. They also follow different journalists on this platform. 

Reddit for fun

Reddit, an American social news aggregation website, is not very popular in Africa. However, most Africans use Reddit for fun. Around 75% of the survey participants actively discuss interests and hobbies on Reddit platform. Reddit has only 6% of active users in Africa.

Photo and video sharing app, Instagram, is used by Africans for creativity. Around 62% of the survey participants use Instagram to explore creative content and learn about emerging trends. Africans mostly follow influencers and celebrities on Instagram. Most people also share their own photos and videos on Instagram. Instagram is also used as an entertainment and learning platform.
