Immediately after taking office in the White House, Donald Trump has caused the United States to backtrack on climate action. The American president has declared that he will once again withdraw his nation from the historic Paris climate agreement while his country remains one of the world’s leading carbon polluters.
The withdrawal, which is expected to take effect in 2026, could be a blow to global efforts to combat global warming. The US departure could undermine the world power’s climate goals and block international climate negotiations.
Under President Joe Biden, the United States has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% by 2035 and to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. However, Trump wants to do the opposite of this program. In his inauguration speech, he notably declared a “ state of energy emergency ” aimed at boosting US oil and gas production by pumping without limits the enormous oil reserves in Alaska and Antarctica.
The Republican also ordered federal agencies to reject international climate finance commitments made by the previous administration and to end subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles.
