Trump announces decrees for his first day as president

Just before his inauguration, Donald Trump made dramatic statements to supporters who gathered in Washington on 20 January 2025.

On his first day as president, he promised to move at ‘historic speed’ and sign executive orders to ‘get the country back on track’.

He took the credit for the Gaza ceasefire deal which took effect on Sunday morning, bringing a pause to 15 months of devastating fighting in the Strip. Washington was one of the mediator countries in the ceasefire negotiations. The first group of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza were released the same day.

Trump’s inauguration will take place in Washington on Monday at 6 pm CET.

The decision to move the event indoors earlier this week was made due to the frigid temperatures forecast in the city.
