Uganda ‘s National Authority for Identification and Registration briefly shut down after positive COVID-19 case

Uganda’s National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) was on Monday closed temporarily after a security personnel tested positive for COVID-19.

“One person has tested positive at our head offices-Kololo ceremonial grounds and the person is undergoing treatment.

NIRA headquarters shall therefore be closed to the public for 2 days -Tuesday 15th Sept & Wednesday 16th Sept 2020 to prevent further spreading,” NIRA said in a press release.

The authority said the premises will carry out a disinfection exercise in the premises in line with health guidelines before reopening to the public.

The services that will remain suspended during the two-day closure include issuance of national identification documents, issuance of birth and death certificates and replacement of lost national identity cards.

Uganda had reported 4,978 confirmed COVID-19 cases by Monday afternoon, having seen a rise by 179 infections in the past 24 hours.

Figures announced by the East African country’s health ministry also showed one more death had been reported in the past day, bringing the total number of fatalities to 56.
