The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), one of the main UN organs charged with ensuring international peace and security, is set to hold its first formal discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) this week in New York, the most populous city in the United States.
Reportedly, Britain will talk about AI’s impact on global peace and security. James Cleverly, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, will chair the discussion about the potential risks of AI on Tuesday.
This month, Britain has the rotating presidency of the UNSC and it has been pursuing global leadership in AI regulation.
Last month, Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, backed a proposal by some artificial intelligence analysts for the creation of an international AI watchdog body to monitor the dangers of AI technology.
Antonio Guterres warned that artificial intelligence (AI) was used to spread disinformation and hate. He said that the risks posed by AI threaten democracy and human rights. He further said, “These scientists and experts have called on the world to act, declaring AI an existential threat to humanity on a par with the risk of nuclear war.”
In recent months, AI has also become a focus of concern among governments around the world. They expressed concerns over the dangers of emerging AI technology.
Barbara Woodward, the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, said that the meeting on 18 July will feature presentations from AI experts and Antonio Guterres. Barbara Woodward highlighted the United Kingdom’s objective of managing the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
However, Woodward also acknowledged some benefits of AI. She noted that AI has the potential to bridge the gap between developing and developed countries. She also highlighted the importance of addressing security concerns associated with AI.
