USA – League Cup: Bongokuhle Hlongwane joins Lionel Messi as top scorer

On the morning of Wednesday, Minnesota United took on Deportivo Toluca in the League Cup Round of 8. In a very intense match, South Africa’s Bongokuhle Hlongwane made a major contribution to his side’s 2-2 win (2-4 on penalties). He joins Messi at the top of the goalscoring charts.

In the first half, team-mate Joseph Rosales opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The South African striker then showed his brilliance by scoring a second spectacular goal in the 32nd minute to make it 2-0. In a magnificent team move, the ball was delivered to him in the penalty area. Hlongwane picked out the goalkeeper and two defenders, taking his time before finishing successfully. The goal puts him level with Lionel Messi, both of whom have scored 7 goals in 4 matches in the competition.

In the second half, the home side managed to close the gap, forcing a penalty shoot-out to decide the tie. In the end, Bongokuhle Hlongwane and his team, Minnesota United, progressed to the last 16 of the Leagues Cup by winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2.
