USA vs Uruguay: Scoreless Draw In Pre-World Cup Friendly 2022

In a goalless tie with Uruguay, the United States lacked finishing expertise. Jesus Ferreira missed two first-half opportunities as the USMNT’s goal-scoring woes continued in a 0-0 draw against Uruguay on Sunday, their second of 4 World Cup preseason matches this month.

The United States entered the field three hours after discovering Wales will be its first Group B World Cup rival in November, extending their home undefeated record to 25 games since losing to Mexico in September 2019. That’s one less than the team’s previous high from 2013-15.

Ferreira had the finest chance for the United States, with a 15-yard effort by Fernando Muslera in the 19th minute and an open header going wide shortly after.

Ferreira was replaced in the 61st minute by Haji Wright, who scored his first goal on Wednesday.

Ferreira scored the only goal for the USMNT attackers in the team’s past 13 games, a 5-1 thumping of Panama in a World Cup qualification on 27th March.

In the 3rd minute of second-half halftime, Edinson Cavani missed an 8-yard effort for Uruguay, a rare error from the generally dependable striker.

Weston McKennie made his first start for club and country since fracturing two bones in his left foot with Juventus on Feb. 22. It was the USMNT’s first game against a South American rival since a 1-1 tie against Uruguay in St. Louis in 2019.

Sean Johnson was in goal for the first time since January 2020 for the United States, and the 32-year-old utilized his left calf to deliver a point-blank block on Darwin Nunez 15 minutes into the second half.

The United States began DeAndre Yedlin in lieu of Reggie Cannon at right back, Joe Scally at left back in place of Antonee Robinson, and McKennie in place of Brenden Aaronson.

When Robinson replaced Yedlin in the 62nd minute, Scally made his first debut after making his debut in a 3-0 victory over Morocco.
