WAFCON 2022: Cameroon, Nigeria Set For Explosive Quarter-Final Clash

Cameroon and Nigeria are set for the explosive quarter-final clash in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Thursday. This will be the first time the WAFCON is having a quarter-final stage because of the increase in the number of participants to 12 from 8.

The quarter-final match will be played between the Super Falcons, Nigeria national women’s football team, and the Indomitable Lionesses, Cameroon national women’s football team, at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on Thursday. It will be the 15th match between the two countries at WAFCON.

The beaten side will participate in a play-off for two slots in a 10-team intercontinental playoff tournament, which will take place in New Zealand from February 17-23 to determine the last three 2023 World Cup teams.

The expansion of the teams from 24 to 32 teams has resulted in more slots for Africa – from 3 in 2019 to a possible 6 in 2023

Cameroon and Nigeria

Cameroon was unbeaten in their four matches in the competition, but Nigeria suffered one defeat, the loss coming against South Africa in their opening WAFCON 2022 fixture. Bayana Bayana, the South African women’s national soccer team, opened the tournament with a win against the champions Super Falcons of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s performance improved against Botswana and Burundi as they scored six goals across both games and conceded none.

Cameroon and Nigeria’s performance on Thursday will be the biggest tie in the quarter-finals and will mark the end of the road for one of the tournament’s favourites. The game, which began in Morocco, will end.

WAFCON 2022

The 2022 WAFCON, officially known as the 2022 TotalEnergies WAFCON, is the 14th edition of the African international women’s football tournament, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
