WAFCON 2022: SA crowned champions amid record attendance

The Banyana Banyana from South Africa were proclaimed the new champions of the 14th edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations, which was put on by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the women’s national teams of Africa. Zambia defeated Nigeria to take home the bronze. Here are five of the tournament’s highlights after three weeks of play.

Record attendance

Millions of people throughout the continent love football. In Africa, women’s football is steadily gaining popularity. At the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay-Abdellah in Rabat, the semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco attracted a record-breaking 45,562 spectators. The final between South Africa and Morocco on Saturday improved this figure. This WAFCON match had the highest attendance to date with almost 50,000 spectators in the terraces.

Banyana Banyana finally bring the cup home

Ghizlane Chebbak, the captain of Morocco, converted an outstanding free kick against Burkina Faso. Ajara Nchout’s goal for Cameroon versus Botswana, Rasheedat Ajibade’s diving header for Nigeria, or Sumayah Komuntale’s strike for Morocco.

Female coaches

At the 2022 CAF Awards, Desiree Ellis, a coach from South Africa, was named Coach of the Year. Her 29-year journey eventually paid off. Even if just one coach returns home with the gold medal, this WAFCON gave female African coaches cause for optimism. Three female coaches attended the competition for the first time in the tournament’s history. included Ellis from South Africa, Kai Tomety from Togo, and Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang of Botswana.
