WAFCON 2022: Three Countries Qualify For Quarter-Finals

Three countries, Morocco, Senegal, and South Africa have qualified for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals.

South Africa became the third team to qualify after defeating Burundi 3-1 in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. Bayana Bayana, the South African women’s national soccer team, consolidate their position at the top of Group C, with six points from two matches.

Earlier, South Africa also opened the tournament with a win against the champions Super Falcons of Nigeria. In Thursday’s game, South Africa took the lead again. However, it was a second loss for Burundi.

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana will play Botswana in their final group game on Sunday. Burundi has no chance of advancing to the knock-out stages of the tournament as they have no points after two matches.

Morocco and Senegal

Morocco and Senegal earned places in the WAFCON quarter-finals after both won their second successive group matches. They won their first two fixtures against Uganda and Burkina Faso, the other two teams in Group A.

In the other Group A match, Senegal scored late to secure a place in the knockout stages, beating Burkina Faso 1-0. However, a penalty in each half helped Morocco beat Uganda 3-1 in Group A.

Both teams already qualified for the quarterfinals will lock horns in Rabat on Friday, 8 July 2022. The face-off will decide the winner of the group.
