On 9 December, OpenAI made its Sora video generator available to certain ChatGPT users, as part of the ‘shipmas’ announcement cascade.
The organisation first demonstrated Sora’s capabilities in February 2024. In the months since, it has built a faster version and explored how to deliver AI video generators responsibly.
OpenAI’s focus on Sora’s safety is a standard for generative AI these days. Nevertheless, it also shows the importance of precautions to be taken regarding AI that could be used to create convincing false images, which could, for example, damage an organisation’s reputation.
Sora is a generative AI broadcast model. Sora can generate multiple characters, complex backgrounds and realistic movements in videos of up to one minute in length. It can also create multiple shots within a single video, keeping characters and visual style consistent and making Sora an effective storytelling tool.
Sora can be used to generate videos to accompany content, to promote content or products on social media, or to illustrate points in corporate presentations. While it should not replace the creative spirit of professional videographers, Sora can be used to create certain content more quickly and easily.
The UK, Switzerland and parts of Europe will not have access to Sora for the time being
Sora is currently available in all regions with access to ChatGPT, with the exception of the UK, Switzerland and the European Economic Area. The Guardian points out that Sora still needs to comply with the EU’s GDPR and Digital Services Act, as well as the UK’s Online Safety Act. OpenAI said in December that it planned to extend access ‘in the coming months’.
Since December, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users have been able to access Sora on sora.com.
Sora videos can have a resolution of 1080p, a maximum length of 20 seconds and a screen format of wide, vertical or square. The interface allows users to insert their own content, and the storyboard tool helps them organise their messages in order.
Sora is a diffusion model, meaning it gradually refines a nonsense image into a comprehensible one based on the prompt and uses a transformer architecture. The research OpenAI performed to create its DALL-E and GPT models — particularly the recapturing technique from DALL-E — were stepping stones to Sora’s creation.
