Why #NationalShutdown is Trending in Africa?

The hashtag of National Shutdown is trending in social platform X formerly known as twitter. The #NationalShutdown is on number one with over 15.8k just in one day. This hashtag is trending with the message to the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign from his position.

The citizens of South Africa are starting a protest calling it “National Shutdown.”

What #NationalShutdown Means?

The people on social media called for a protest on 9th December Monday and uses the “National Shut down” word for that.

It is because of the “2023 South African National Shutdown” protest held by the political party Economic Freedom Fighters on 20 March 2023. The EFF called for the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa as an end to load shedding during that 2023 protest.

Now again social media users are using the same term to call for protest and asking the South African President to resign.

Every post comes with disappointment regarding the president’s ruling. There are so many allegations on Cyril Ramaphosa. Notably Ramaphosa had allegations of intentionally misleading the Parliament of South Africa over the controversial Bosasa donations to his CR17 ANC presidential campaign and controversial farm theft scandal.

One post reads, “We’re not afraid to be arrested and die for protecting what is for the future generations. #NationalShutdown”

Another post reads, “The #NationalShutdown will take place! It is our democratic and constitutional right to act and demonstrate PEACEFULLY if the government or president as in this case doesn’t perform as expected by citizens. The “Zuma Must Fall” demonstration was treated with a different energy!”
