2023 Africa Cup Of Nations Postponed Over Weather Concerns In Ivory Coast

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been postponed to 2024 over weather concerns in Ivory Coast. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed the postponement on Sunday.

The AFCON was initially scheduled for June to July 2023. The Ivorian meteorological agency predicted heavy rainfall in many parts of the country during June 2023. Ivory Coast may witness heavy rainfall due to its tropical climate. The AFCON will now take place between January and February 2024.

The Ivory Coast was handed hosting rights in place of Cameroon for the 34th edition of the continent’s top international competition.

Recently, heavy rainfall and flood in the Ivory Coast injured many people. At least five people, including four children, died because of the flood.

What did the CAF President say?

CAF President reportedly said, “It is not good for African football to play a tournament that can be washed out, so we have to postpone it.” The president also said, “January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have.” The decision was one of the main decisions taken during the Confederation of African Football Executive Committee meeting.

At a press conference, the Committee also announced the decision to create an African Super League next season, which will be formally launched on August 10.

What can be the impact of this move?

The move reportedly risks the wrath of top-flight managers across Europe. This year, Liverpool lost both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to the tournament. Ultimately, Senegal beat Egypt in the final.

Liverpool will be impacted by another mid-season tournament in 2023 and 2024 after this decision because the team will again be without Salah and Keita midway through 2023-24.

The most recent AFCON saw Salah and Mane pitted against each other in the final. The next AFCON will reveal the fate of the players.
